Weezer Deluxe Blue Album 30th Anniversary Reissue

Ahead of Weezer’s big tour for the 30th anniversary of their “Blue Album,” they’re prepping a massive reissue of the album.

They’re getting ready to drop a remastered version with 36 never-before-heard demos, live recordings, and other cool stuff, including the legendary “Kitchen Tape” demos. It will be available in many formats on November 1.

The band is hyping it up by sharing a “third practice” recording of “Undone — The Sweater Song.” It sounds pretty raw as they sing and rap over an eerie guitar line. Things get wild halfway through, with talk about lying naked on the floor and a rough guitar solo that shows off Rivers Cuomo’s heavy-metal background. You can tell they’re having a blast and might know it’s going to be a hit.

“We decided that there was no need to simply repackage what’s already been uncovered (with the deluxe edition), when there was so much unreleased cool stuff still to reveal,” the band said in a statement. “Some of which has been buried for 3 decades, un-listened to!”

A super limited edition of the reissue comes packed in an actual sweater, available to just 100 fans who visit their webstore, complete with a certificate signed by the band.

The Super Deluxe Edition, minus the sweater, includes the original album and all the extras spread across four LPs, a 10-inch EP with BBC recordings, and a seven-inch with LMU Sessions. Karl Koch, the band’s unofficial historian, wrote the liner notes. Fans can also find pullable threads, lithographs, posters, stickers, a 12-sided die, and an enamel pin in the package.

There are other versions too, like a double-LP edition, a zoetrope picture disc, and single LP editions in ghostly blue and clear color vinyl. These can be found on the band’s label site, their webstore, and indie shops.

The Blue Album, released on May 10, 1994, went triple platinum, thanks to hits like “Undone,” “Buddy Holly,” and “Say It Ain’t So.”

We think it’s really exciting to see old bands bringing back their classics in new ways.

Weezer’s Voyage to the Blue Planet tour, featuring the Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr., starts Wednesday in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and wraps up next month at Inglewood, California’s Intuit Dome.
