Morello mentioned that he and Malone also worked on an incomplete track, likening it to what “Beat It” was for Michael Jackson.
Post Malone has been collaborating with a wide range of artists lately, from Dolly Parton to Doja Cat and Taylor Swift, and even has an unfinished song with Tom Morello.
On the Eddie Trunk Podcast, Morello shared about this song that he and Malone started about five or six years back during a studio session.
“We wrote a song together that, to my ears, sounds like what ‘Beat It’ was to Michael Jackson,” Morello said. “It is a banger. It is an absolutely awesome rock tune and I can’t get him to finish it.”
He noted Malone’s busy schedule and immense talent, drawing parallels between Malone’s songwriting approach and that of Chris Cornell.
“When we would write songs with Chris, we sort of threw music at him — whether it was a simple chord progression like ‘I Am the Highway’ or a more complicated heavy riff — and he would just come up instantaneously with a bunch of great melodies,” Morello recalled. “We’d put those down, and then he would write words to whatever, and that’s exactly how Post Malone does it.”
