The Weather Station Releases Neon Signs, Announces Album Humanhood

Toronto’s band, the Weather Station, is back with "Neon Signs" from their new album, Humanhood, set for release on January 17, 2025.

Tamara Lindeman, the band’s lead, shared how she penned "Neon Signs" during a period of confusion when everything felt upside down, even losing her desires, feeling detached from a story that wasn’t right but still held things together. The song’s lyrics capture this chaos vividly: "Every neon sign every flashing light tries to fool you/Get you on their side, everybody swears they need you, and only you, to make the buy," and the music video, which Lindeman directed with Jared Raab, reflects this frenetic energy.

In Lindeman’s words, "The song came with multiple strands entwined; the way that something that is not true seems to have more energetic intensity than something that is, the confusion of being bombarded with advertising at a moment of climate emergency, the confusion of relationships where coercion is wrapped in the language of love. Ultimately though, isn’t it all the same feeling?”

Fans can feel the whirlwind of emotions she shares. The upcoming album, Humanhood, marks the Weather Station’s return after a few years, following their highly praised albums Ignorance (2021) and How Is It That I Should Look at the Stars (2022). These records boosted Lindeman’s career significantly, even as she faced personal mental health struggles. For Humanhood, she drew inspiration from her present experiences, describing her path to reconnecting.

Recorded last fall in Toronto’s Canterbury Music studio, Humanhood was co-produced by Lindeman and Marcus Paquin, featuring musicians like Kieran Adams, Philippe Melanson, Ben Boye, Ben Whiteley, and Karen Ng. Special contributions were made by Sam Amidon, James Elkington, Joseph Shabason, and Joseph Lodge.

The Weather Station is gearing up for a tour across the U.K. and Europe in February and March next year, but North American dates remain unannounced for now.
