Teddy Swims Discusses Lose Control and Trusting His Gut

The “Lose Control” Journey

Teddy Swims, the artist behind “Lose Control,” opens up about his hit track from 2023 and the power of raw honesty in his songs.

As Jaten Dimsdale was shaping his career as Teddy Swims, he received some wise words from a friend: Trust your instincts. When talking to Rolling Stone’s Delisa Shannon backstage at Lollapalooza, Swims recalled his friend challenging him, saying, “If you could tell me one time in your life that your gut has ever been wrong, I’ll shut up.” Swims couldn’t think of a single moment where his gut feelings had failed him.

Ever since then, Swims decided to always follow his gut. He explained how he listens to his inner feelings and acts quickly if something feels off. He emphasized that he talks about things as they happen instead of keeping them inside. “I just trust my gut,” he said. “And that’s all you can do.”

Putting his hands on his stomach, he joked, “This is the only thing that has your back.”

Swims also discussed the difficult relationship experiences that led to his breakout song, “Lose Control.” He talked about getting comfortable with being so open in his music and learning when to keep some things private.

“I try to be as honest and open as possible,” Swims shared. “I think it helps others feel like they can do the same or accept me as I am. I’m not perfect, but I strive for honesty. Having this platform to share my thoughts and feelings makes me feel connected and less alone. The more honest I get, the more genuine the world around me becomes.”

Fans appreciate how relatable and real he is.
