St. Vincent Re-Records All Born Screaming in Spanish

St. Vincent has re-recorded her seventh album in Spanish and named it Todos Nacen Gritando.

Annie Clark, known as St. Vincent, got help from her friend Alan Del Rio Ortiz to translate each song. Ortiz is a filmmaker who has worked with many famous artists.

"The origins of Todos Nacen Gritando can be traced back to some of the most memorable shows I’ve ever played, in Mexico, South America and recently Primavera Barcelona in 2023,” Clark explained in a statement. “Though separated by time and geography, and across a diverse range of settings and venues, these crowds were united in their passion — singing every word to every song in perfect English. It was truly inspiring."

She continued, saying, "Eventually, I asked myself: If they can sing along in a second or third language, why can’t I meet them halfway?" So, she and Ortiz worked on the translations, making sure the new lyrics fit the melodies. The album is both a labor of love and a tribute to the fans.

It’s interesting how artists sometimes remake their albums. Back in 2018, St. Vincent released MassEducation, which had quieter versions of her Masseduction songs.

Fans might enjoy knowing that other artists have done similar projects. Sting, David Lee Roth, and Christina Aguilera have all re-released albums in Spanish. Even Phil Collins sang his Tarzan soundtrack in Spanish, French, German, and Italian. More recently, Elvis Costello had a compilation of his songs sung in Spanish by various artists.

Creating a Spanish version of her album lets St. Vincent share even more with her fans. She talked earlier this year about being more open in her music. “In past records, I’ve been very interested in the idea of persona and iconography,” she said. “I realized I’ve done that in my work because I’m queer. I’ve known that gender is performance since I was a child. But this record isn’t about persona or identity. It’s just about, like, life and death and love, and how in some ways life is impossible but we get to live it.”
