Raye’s Emotional Performance on The Daily Show
Raye took the stage on The Daily Show to sing “Genesis” with a full band, including strings and horns.
Earlier this year, Raye put out “Genesis,” a song she co-wrote and produced with Marvin Hemmings, Rodney Jerkins, Shankar Ravindran, and Tom Richards. She first sang it live at the Brit Awards and later performed it on Saturday Night Live in April.
The song’s performance on The Daily Show was both powerful and touching, as it deals with body image issues through three distinct parts.
While chatting with Desi Lydic on the show, Raye talked about her new album, Live at Montreux Jazz Festival, and what inspired “Genesis.”
“I think music is medicine,†Raye said to Lydic. “I always say that. Even sitting here and talking to you about these sort of heavier subjects I get nervous. I don’t really know how to address it or what to say, and I think music is a safe space to kind of be raw and honest. And for me, that’s my safe place. That’s my therapy.â€
Fans can relate to using music as a form of therapy.
Live at Montreux Jazz Festival, which was recorded in July, came out earlier this month. The complete seven-track album will be available on YouTube on Oct. 1.
“Playing Montreux Jazz Festival was one of the greatest musical honors I have ever been granted,†Raye shared. She felt awe for all the legendary artists who had performed there before. Stepping off that stage, she was on cloud nine.
Raye’s first album, My 21st Century Blues, won Album of the Year at the Brit Awards in March. At the same event, she snagged four more awards: Songwriter of the Year, Best R&B Act, Best New Artist, and Artist of the Year, making history as the most nominated artist at the Brits.
