Pink Shares Behind-the-Scenes of DNC Performance With Daughter Willow

Pink and Willow’s Special Performance

Pink has sung on many stages in her life, but last week at the Democratic National Convention, it was a big moment for her daughter, Willow Sage Hart, who is 13.

Before they went out to perform “What About Us,” Pink gave Willow some comforting advice. She told her, “Just do your thing. Whatever you don’t sing, I will. It’s going to be brilliant.” As they walked out together, three singers and a guitarist joined them for a simple version of the song. Willow started singing, and the crowd cheered, while Pink smiled proudly.

Right before this, people affected by gun violence shared their stories and called for change. Rep. Lucy McBath said, “Our losses do not weaken us. They strengthen our resolve.” She added that they would work hard for a safer future.

Other speakers included Abbey Clements, a Sandy Hook survivor, and Kim Rubio, whose daughter died in the Uvalde shooting. Melody McFadden and Edgar Vilchez also shared the stage. Rubio said, “Parents reach out for their children. I reach out for the child I will never hold again.”

In 2019, Pink faced criticism after sharing a poem by Brian Bilston called “America Is a Gun.” The poem compared different countries to objects, ending with “America is a gun.”

Fox News’ Britt McHenry had tweeted (but later deleted) her disappointment, saying, “There is nothing ‘better’ to be than an American.” She believed unity was needed and felt let down by Pink.

Pink replied firmly, stating, “I believe there is nothing ‘better’ than being a human being. Each country has their beauty,+their struggles. We should all be thinking humans first. And I also believe art is meant to cause dialogue, which the posting of this poem just did. Dissent is the cornerstone of democracy.”

Fans think Pink’s response was very wise and clear.
