Finneas Sings About Unrequited Love in “Cleats”
"Cleats" is a song where Finneas talks about the tough feelings of unreturned love, and it will be part of his new album, For Cryin’ Out Loud.
The song has a catchy indie pop vibe with lyrics about a relationship that’s not going anywhere because the girl isn’t interested in boys. Still, there’s always a bit of hope.
In the music video, directed by Isaac Ravishankara, the story unfolds in a bedroom. A tiny version of Finneas sings while a boy tries to kiss a girl, but she leaves quickly. Even though it’s sad, they stay friends. The final lyrics capture this: “Nothing you can do either/Old crush on the new teacher/Wave as soon as you see her/From the bleachers.”
For Cryin’ Out Loud will be out on October 4th through Interscope. Last month, Finneas revealed the album and shared the title track along with another video by Ravishankara. This will be his second album after Optimist, which came out in 2021.
Fans are eager to hear the new songs live.
To celebrate the album, Finneas is planning special shows in Los Angeles, London, and New York City. He’ll perform at the Ford in LA on October 3, Banquet Records in London on October 6, and Warsaw in Brooklyn on October 12. Tickets can be found on his website.
In an earlier chat with Rolling Stone, Finneas talked about how he made Optimist alone, which was both rewarding and lonely. He said, “I didn’t feel like, ‘This is the best possible way it could sound, I’m so glad I made it alone.’ I thought I did an OK job. So on this album [For Cryin’ Out Loud], I’ve made a point to be hyper-collaborative. Fortunately, most of my friends are producers.”
Making music with friends sounds like a lot more fun!
