Modest Mouse Announces Tour for Good News Album

Modest Mouse is gearing up for a special fall tour to celebrate the 20th birthday of their hit album Good News For People Who Love Bad News.

This album, featuring the popular song "Float On," moved them from indie fame to mainstream rock success. The tour starts in Honolulu on October 28 and ends in Brooklyn in late November. Earlier this year, an expanded version of the album was released with eight bonus tracks, including remixes by Poolside, Jacknife Lee, Dan the Automator, and Andrew VanWyngarden from MGMT.

The band started in Portland, Oregon, with Isaac Brock, Jeremiah Green, and Eric Judy. Their big break came with the 1997 album The Lonesome Crowded West. They signed with Epic Records and released The Moon & Antarctica in 2000. But it was Good News For People Who Love Bad News that brought them commercial success, mainly because of "Float On," a track with bright tunes and positive lyrics, unlike many of their indie peers.

In an interview with Brian Hiatt for Rolling Stone’s Music Now podcast, Brock shared, “It’s easy to sound angry or fucking agitated or flippant, but owning feelings without sounding super-sappy — or even being sappy without sounding too saccharine and crappy — is a real fucking trick and shit. I’m always really happy when it works out.” He also mentioned that "Float On" was a last-minute addition: “‘Float On’ wasn’t really written until the last couple of days of tracking. Once it got done, I was like, ‘Yeah, this is fun.’ I mean, lyrically, I kind of felt like maybe it was a bit too goofy, and shit. Like, ‘This is fun, but is it silly?’.”

Fans think it’s great that they’re celebrating such a memorable album.

Good News For People Who Like Bad News achieved double platinum status and even got a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. After that, they released We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, featuring Johnny Marr on guitar. Despite many lineup changes, Isaac Brock has kept the band going strong, with their latest release being The Golden Casket in 2021. Sadly, drummer Jeremiah Green passed away from cancer in 2022.
