Lauryn Hill is hitting back at Pras Michél’s lawsuit against her over claims she mismanaged the Fugees’ tour for personal gain.
She called the suit “baseless†and said she decided to include the Fugees in the tour to help Pras with his legal troubles. Hill explained that she kept quiet because she knew Pras was under stress from his court battles, which might have clouded his judgment.
Pras’s attorneys allege Hill took 40% of tour profits while splitting the rest with Jean and Pras, leaving him with little money. They claim she controlled the budget and added fake expenses to make it look like the tour was losing money.
Hill countered, saying the lawsuit ignores that Pras got a $3 million advance for the last tour and still hasn’t repaid loans she gave him to cover his legal fees. She said the tour was initially to celebrate her album’s anniversary and included the Fugees to support Pras financially.
Fans sometimes wonder why celebrities have such complicated money issues.
Hill claimed she covered most tour expenses and Pras hasn’t paid back the advance, which breaks their agreement. She handled the production and logistics, and Pras only had to show up and perform.
“As of the last tour, Pras thanked me for ‘saving his life’ (I have the receipts),” Hill stated. She expressed disappointment at seeing Pras in this situation, attributing his actions to his legal troubles, which she had no part in.
“I was not in Pras’ life when he decided to make the unfortunate decision that led to his current legal troubles,†Hill wrote. “I did not advise that he make that decision and therefore am in no way responsible for his decision and its consequences though I have taken it upon myself to help.â€
Hill signed off with compassion, hoping things work out for Pras despite his attacks, and added, “Respectfully, MLH.”
Pras’s legal team responded, calling Hill’s statement “categorically false.†They questioned why she hadn’t provided an accounting to Pras or allowed him to audit her records, and accused her of tarnishing the Fugees brand with her chronic lateness.
Meloni criticized Hill’s tardiness, saying it hurt the tour and financially harmed Pras. He also claimed Hill misrepresented financial details and took an excessive share of the tour’s proceeds.
The lawsuit also mentioned Hill rejected a $5 million offer to play Coachella because they would be billed below No Doubt, a fact Pras learned too late.
