Julien Baker and Torres Hit the Stage
Julien Baker and Torres recently performed their brand-new country song, “Sugar in the Tank,” on The Tonight Show.
With Baker on the banjo and Torres on guitar, they sang about relationships, pouring emotion into lines like, “I hate just watching through the window when you pull up and I’m still thinking I should stay home.” They added, “Sitting outside with the engine running/ Just waiting on me to change/ So c’mon baby, put a little/ Sugar in the tank/ I love you all the way.”
Before revealing a 2025 tour schedule, which includes stops at High Water Music Festival and Green River Festival, the duo had already hinted at their partnership. In October, they shared two new tracks at Webster Hall in New York, offering a sneak peek into their musical style. They also shared a clip on Instagram of what might be a Western-themed music video, teasing fans with “Next week… we ride.”
Fans are excited about the duo’s creative journey and can’t wait for the tour.
Since Boygenius took a break, Baker has been busy with her solo career. Her latest album, Little Oblivions, came out in 2021. She toured with Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten in 2022, and then Boygenius released their debut album in 2023. The group, which also includes Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers, went on a big tour and even snagged some Grammy awards.
In a Rolling Stone interview, Baker opened up about dealing with fame. She admitted, “There is a part of me that gets very easily intimidated by stuff because I have a country-mouse complex,” but she also feels that her life won’t change drastically without her say-so. She finds comfort in knowing she can always return home to simple tasks, like helping neighbors mow lawns, after playing larger venues.
