A guitar that George Harrison played with the Beatles when they were just starting out was sold for $1.27 million at an auction in Nashville.
Initially, Julien’s Auctions estimated its worth between $600,000 and $800,000, but it surpassed expectations and became the priciest guitar owned by Harrison ever auctioned. Back in 1959, the “Quiet Beatle” bought the Futurama from a Liverpool music shop and used it in over 324 performances, as well as during their initial Polydor Records sessions.
The unique sound of this guitar is featured in the song “My Bonnie,” performed with Tony Sheridan in 1961 and also in “Cry for a Shadow,” co-written with John Lennon. People often find it fascinating how musical instruments carry so much history and sentiment.
An auction called “Played, Worn, & Torn II” took place over two days, showcasing more than 800 items from famous musicians like Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Britney Spears, Dolly Parton, The Rolling Stones, and Nirvana. Prince’s guitar, used in his 1986 tour, fetched $381,000.
Recently, George Harrison’s estate and Dark Horse Records released a special 50th-anniversary edition of his album Living in a Material World, which includes a fresh mix, original tracks, rare songs, a 60-page book, and some singles he gifted to Ringo Starr.
