Fani Willis Republican Challenger Vows to End YSL Trial

Courtney Kramer is urging the Fulton County District Attorney to let go of those detained without bond and drop the case.

The Republican Challenger

Kramer, who’s running against Fani Willis for DA in Fulton County, Georgia, has vowed to stop the prosecution of Young Thug and the YSL trial if she wins in November.

In a statement shared on Tuesday, August 27, Kramer declared that her first action as DA would be to dismiss the YSL case. She called on Willis to release those held without bond immediately.

Kramer slammed the way the DA’s office has handled the long-running trial, which has been dragging on for over two years, making it the lengthiest criminal trial in Georgia’s history. “With no apparent justice in sight, I have become highly concerned and disappointed in the lack of prosecutorial oversight in this case,” she said. “As time goes on, the public has witnessed a trial that is undoubtedly over prosecuted by attorneys who have repeatedly been admonished for lack of trial preparation: a complete and utter waste of the court’s time.”

She also expressed confusion about why taxpayer money was being spent on a case that relied heavily on witnesses she considered unreliable. “Not only have I lost any ounce of faith that justice is in fact being served and the people of Fulton County are being advocated for in an ethical and transparent manner, but this case should have ended by now. Even former DA Paul Howard declined to bring this case, and now the public can see why.”

It must be really frustrating for fans to see this case dragging on with so many issues.

The Willis campaign hasn’t responded to requests for comments yet.

Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffrey Williams, and other defendants were initially arrested in May 2022 under a massive RICO indictment. After ten months to select a jury, the trial finally began in late November 2023. This summer, the trial faced disruptions due to claims of improper meetings between Judge Ural Glanville and prosecutors, excluding the defense. Eventually, Glanville was removed, and a new judge resumed the trial in early August.

Since then, things haven’t settled down. After another mistrial motion was denied, there was a chaotic week of testimony from Kenneth Copeland, a key prosecution witness, who frequently answered questions with “I don’t recall.” He even admitted to lying multiple times during police interviews about a 2015 drive-by shooting murder that prosecutors claim Young Thug was involved in.

Kramer’s move to take a strong stance against Willis on the YSL trial adds to her criticism of Willis’ other significant case: the prosecution of Donald Trump for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia. This case has also seen its fair share of chaos, partly due to Willis’ relationship with another prosecutor involved. Kramer entered the race against Willis, citing the Trump indictment as a key reason. She previously worked in the Trump White House and his campaign.
