Elton John’s Take on Marijuana Legalization
Elton John, who’s been sober since 1990, thinks it was a huge mistake to make marijuana legal, saying it’s addictive and can lead to other drugs. “I maintain that it’s addictive,” he mentioned in an interview with Time, which also named him Icon of the Year. “It leads to other drugs. And when you’re stoned — and I’ve been stoned — you don’t think normally. Legalizing marijuana in America and Canada is one of the greatest mistakes of all time.”
Hope for Elton’s Eye Condition
In the same chat, there wasn’t much said about his right eye infection, which has left him nearly blind. However, his husband, David Furnish, remains hopeful. “I just think it’s just gonna take time, right?” shared Furnish.
People hope that Elton will get better soon because he’s loved by many around the world.
Reflecting on Broadway and Criticism
Elton also talked about why his musical, Tammy Faye, had to shut down quickly. He feels critics were in a certain mood after elections. “It’s a shame for everyone who put so much work in it,” he lamented. “But that’s what happens when you take a chance … It’s a fairly political piece of work. And with that, you have to press somebody’s buttons. The buttons we pressed last night with the critics weren’t the right ones.”
Why Elton Avoids Talent Shows
He explained his reason for not wanting to be a judge on talent shows: “Being on TV all the time kills your career, kills your vibe, kills your charisma totally,” he stated firmly.
Guidance and Praise from Fellow Artists
Chappell Roan sees Elton as a major influence, calling him “one of the original queens.” She shared advice he gave her about songwriting: “The advice he gave me was that the songs will come.” He told her about a time after his first album when he thought he’d run out of ideas but found they were there, waiting to be discovered.
Dua Lipa also spoke fondly of him, recalling their collaboration on “Cold Heart.” She noted, “When Elton and David called me about the collaboration, for me, it was because of our friendship,” adding how his music has always been part of her life.
Elton’s Relationship with His Mother
In a candid moment, Elton described his late mother as a sociopath and a liar. “She was probably one of the biggest liars I’ve ever met,” he said. After hiring an Elton impersonator for her 90th birthday, she told Elton the impersonator was just as good as he was, showcasing their complex relationship.
