Xandra is teasing new music with some well-known artists after releasing her debut single “Body Say” this summer.
Xandra has been spinning tracks since high school and knows how tough it can be to deal with criticism while mastering her skills. Last week, she gave some advice to young women aspiring to be DJs during a chat with Rolling Stone backstage at the U.S. Open Finals Fan Fest.
“For any girl that’s looking to DJ, the boys can be mean. They are going to be mean,” she said. “They’ll tell you you don’t know what you’re doing because of how you look and honestly, you can bleep this, fuck’em. Fuck’em all. You shouldn’t let anyone ever get you down. Especially not a boy.”
Her journey started after watching an Alison Wonderland set at Lollapalooza during her high school years. Inspired, she quickly picked up DJing and landed her first gig at her school’s homecoming. “I started doing frat parties in Cincinnati, where I’m from … I did my first club at 18 and the rest is history,” she shared.
Fans think her story is really inspiring.
At first, Xandra was nervous about sharing her music, but she’s very proud of her first single, “Body Say,” featuring Gigi Grombacher. She mentioned, “I am such a perfectionist, I will not put out anything with my name on it until I’m clinically obsessed with it.”
Next up, she plans to drop more tracks once she finishes her “Body Say” tour. She hinted that these new songs will include collaborations with some artists we probably already know.
When performing, Xandra pays close attention to the audience. “I’m always looking at the crowd. I’m on the fly. You have to be super engaged with your audience honestly,” she explained. “You have to be able to switch on the fly. I’ll play a song and be like ‘Oh my gosh this isn’t hitting,’ I’ll be mixing out within 15 seconds.”
