Bono Receives Presidential Medal of Freedom from Joe Biden

Stars Shine at Medal Ceremony

At the White House, Bono was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Biden along with other famous figures like Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox.

Bono shared his gratitude on social media, expressing, “Thank you, President Biden. Frontmen don’t do humble, but today I was.” Reflecting on his journey, he added, "Rock n roll gave me my freedom… and with it the privilege to work alongside those who’ve had to fight so much harder for theirs. And I want to give it up for my band mates – Edge, Adam, and Larry – without whom I would never have found my voice.”

He also wrote an article for The Atlantic about music’s ties to freedom, mentioning how often "freedom" pops up in rock songs like Bob Dylan’s “Chimes of Freedom.” Bono explained that getting the medal made him think deeply about what freedom means. He talked about growing up in 1960s Ireland and longing for different kinds of freedom.

Fans might wonder if music still has the power to inspire change.

Bono recalled how rock and roll promised uncontainable freedom, a universal language. He said U2’s song “Pride (In the Name of Love)” aimed to echo the freedom they sought through their work with Amnesty International.

A Celebration of Impactful Lives

During the ceremony, the White House praised Bono not just as U2’s lead singer but also as a key figure in fighting AIDS and poverty. His efforts helped launch the PEPFAR AIDS program and create groups like ONE and (RED).

Others honored included Hillary Clinton, Magic Johnson, Lionel Messi, Anna Wintour, George Soros, Ralph Lauren, Jose Andres, and Jane Goodall. The White House stated that these individuals are recognized for their leadership and the positive impact they’ve made globally.
