The Art of Music Photography
Music photography took the spotlight in London at the Abbey Road Music Photography Awards.
The event celebrated this year’s winners and finalists at Studios One and Two, featuring performances by Maverick Sabre’s YOURS collective, JNR Williams, and Aziya. The competition saw a big jump in participation, with over 22,000 photos submitted from 28 countries. People entered pictures into categories like Undiscovered Photographer of the Year and Jazz: The Rebirth of Cool, while judges chose nominees for Portrait, Editorial, and ICON.
Fans love seeing how these awards honor photographers and their unique ways of capturing music moments.
Andreia Lemos, a photographer from London, won Undiscovered Photographer of the Year with a picture of Amyl and the Sniffers. Tom Pallant snagged Music Moment of the Year with his Blur photo, thanks to public votes. “Knowing Graham would launch his guitar 20 feet in the air, I was ready to capture the exact moment… It’s the only time I’ve ever shouted ‘YES!’ out loud after getting a shot,†he exclaimed.
Other winners included Francis Mancini for Live Music with a Darren Styles shot, and Lemphek in the Underground Scenes category for a Hard Stick Festival photo. Adrien H. Tillmann captured Billy Harper, winning Jazz: The Rebirth of Cool, while Lauren Harris took the Making Music award with her image of Joesef. “Small, intimate, quiet moments like this are why I shoot – giving an insight into life off-stage,†shared Harris.
In the special invited categories, Alexa Viscius won the Editorial Award for a bnny image, and Bolade Banjo received the Portrait Award for his photo of Popcaan.
Jill Furmanovsky, recognized for her long and amazing career, got the ICON Award, presented by Rankin and Sally Davies. Celebrated in videos by famous faces like Nile Rodgers and Sting, Noel Gallagher joined onstage, praising her as the “Best photographer ever!”
The amazing pictures from the 2024 MPAs will be on display at the Royal Albert Hall in London from Oct. 8 to Nov. 12.
